General outline of Major in Chemistry

Waseda University was founded in 1882 by Marquis Shigenobu Ohkuma with the aim to uphold the independence of learning, to promote the practical utilization of knowledge, and to create good citizenship. Here it was proposed to foster of harmonious interaction of spiritual with material civilization.

History of the school of science and engineering started in 1908 as the second phase plan of the university. The establishment of the division of pure and applied science is one of the major objectives of the university at the very beginning. In 2007, the school was reorganized as the school of advanced science and engineering. Since then, “Material,” “Life,” and “System” are key words of this school. The aim is the improvement of advanced science and technology, and the creation of an interdisciplinary new area, both of which are based upon natural science.

After the major contribution in the field of engineering, the department of chemistry started in 1973 with an aim to promote molecular science. In 2007, the department was expanded into “Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry” when the school of advanced science and engineering started. The aim of research is the fundamental understanding of the syntheses, structures, and dynamics of all materials-namely, atoms, molecules, and their assemblies, which includes constituents of living organisms.Research activities of the students of the department start from the fourth grade undergraduate level, and the students must present their research results before getting BS, MS, and PhD degree.
